چکیده

In this paper we present a spatial equilibrium model where search frictions hinder the immediate reallocation of workers both within and across local labour markets. Because of the frictions, firms and workers find themselves in bilateral monopoly positions when determining wages. Although workers are not at each instant perfectly mobile across cities, in the baseline model we assume that workers flows are sufficient to equate expected utility across markets. We use the model to explore the joint determination of wages, unemployment, house prices and city size (or migration). A key role of the model is to clarify conditions under this type of spatial equilibrium setup can be estimated. We then use U.S. data over the period 19702007 to explore the fit of model and it quantitative properties of the model. Our main goal is to highlight forces that influence spatial equilibria at 10 year intervals. ∗We thank ... helpful comments and suggestions. †University of British Columbia, and NBER ‡University of British Columbia and Research Fellow, IFS, London §York University.

Choosing Among Competing Theories of The Wage Curve

This paper examines the role of regional unemployment in wage determination. Recent empirical studies have found a negative relationship between local unemployment and the level of wages. The resulting downward sloping curve in the wage-unemployment space has become known as “the wage curve.” While the existence of the wage curve has been well established, little is known about what gives rise ...

Dynamic wage bargaining if benefits are tied to individual wages

In dynamic wage bargaining models it is usually assumed that individual unemployment benefits are a fraction of the average wage level. In most countries, however, unemployment benefits are instead tied to the previous level of individually earned wages. We show how the analysis has to be modified if this fact is taken into account and compare our findings for the wage-setting curve with outcom...

Capital Structure, Wage Bargaining and Employment

We offer a unified framework to analyze the determination of employment, employee effort, wages, profit sharing and capital structure when firms face stochastic revenue shocks. We apply a generalized Nash bargaining solution, which extends the wage bargaining literature by incorporating efficiency wage considerations, profit sharing and capital structure. The profit sharing instrument is demons...

Budgetary Policy and Unemployment Dynamics in an Olg Model with Collective Bargaining*

We consider a dynamic general equilibrium model with capital accumulation and collective wage bargaining and investigate how unemployment responds to structural shocks under two stylised budgetary policies. Under balanced budgets, tax adjustments lead to higher unemployment on impact but enable a quick recovery of employment. By contrast, unbalanced budgets mitigate unemployment effects on impa...

Minimum Wages and Union Bargaining in a Dual Labour Market

The paper analyses the links between a binding minimum wage and union bargaining. A dual labour market model is developed where the rst sector outcome is characterised by bargaining between unions and rms, while in the second sector rms have to pay a statutory minimum wage. It is shown that a minimum wage increase has negative employment e ects only if the bargaining outcome is described by the...
